A standard counterbalance valve is always a compromise between stability and efficiency. High pilot ratios are chosen for efficiency, while low pilot ratios provide better stability.
Since machines rarely operate at maximum load-induced pressure, this often results in unnecessary energy consumption when lowering light or no loads. This happens because the load-induced pressure helps open the valve; when there is no load-induced pressure, a higher pilot pressure is required instead.
SUN Hydraulics offers counterbalance valves specifically designed to solve this unnecessary energy consumption. These valves are particularly suitable for functions and challenges such as:
High cycle rates with varying loads
Variable flow
Applications where energy efficiency is important
Noise, RPM, and working environment considerations
Electric or hybrid vehicles
Safety-critical situations
Runaway loads
A standard counterbalance valve can be directly replaced with a Load Adaptive valve set to the same pressure setting. Sun Hydraulics’ Load Adaptive valves never compromise on stability but provide lower energy consumption by featuring a variable pilot ratio adapted to the load.
For applications with varying flow as well as varying loads, Sun Hydraulics’ Load Match valve is ideal. Its specially designed seat provides smoother lowering motion and can solve issues with oscillations and jerky movements because it can handle a more varied flow. There is no need to adjust a Load Match valve since it senses the load and automatically adjusts itself; therefore, there is no adjustment screw on the valve. This also enhances safety, as unauthorized personnel cannot incorrectly adjust the valve.
