Hydraulic Dampers – How They Work and What to Consider

With ACE Controls hydraulic dampers, the braking force can be adjusted for both the inward and outward movement. These dampers are used to control, slow down, and synchronize swinging and linear motions. Typical applications include the textile industry, automotive industry, industrial machinery, mechanical constructions, and electronics manufacturing.

Construction of a Hydraulic Damper

Hydraulic dampers consist of a cylinder, a piston with adjustable throttling, a piston rod, and seals. The cylinder is filled with oil. By positioning the piston rod at the end position and turning it, the damping force is adjusted via the piston rod’s internal throttling. There are also hydraulic dampers that can be individually adjusted for compressive and tensile directions.

Materials and Accessories for Hydraulic Dampers

Hydraulic dampers are available in diameters from 12 to 70 mm, can handle forces from 30 to 40,000 N, and have stroke lengths up to 800 mm. The standard material is steel, but most models are also available in stainless steel for more demanding environments, such as marine applications.

There are many different mounting options available, including swivel eyes, rod ends, clevis mounts, and ball joints.
