Flow divider valves and flow divider/combiner valves are used to distribute an incoming flow of hydraulic oil to multiple outlets, or to combine flows from several circuits into a single line. They are particularly useful when a large flow needs to be split to drive multiple cylinders or motors simultaneously, or when flows from several components need to be merged without affecting each other’s performance. Flow dividers ensure that each actuator receives the correct amount of oil to operate efficiently, contributing to smooth and reliable performance in hydraulic systems with multiple parallel functions.

Flow divider valves are commonly used in systems with two or more cylinders to lift, lower or move platforms, beds, ramps, gangways, fork positioners and various attachments. They are also frequently used in drive systems for smaller vehicles, where they distribute flow to wheel motors for traction. Thanks to their ability to split flow, flow dividers enable efficient and synchronized control of multiple hydraulic functions simultaneously.
Sun Hydraulics offers several flow divider models designed to accurately synchronize cylinders at end positions. When used with cylinders, it’s common to select models that can also collect and return the flow from the return stroke. Flow dividers designed for one-way flow are typically used in combination with hydraulic motors.
Another common method of dividing flow is with rotary flow dividers. Both rotary flow dividers and valve solutions from Sun Hydraulics have their advantages and disadvantages. Rotary flow dividers are often larger and more cumbersome, and they can produce higher noise levels, but they typically offer good accuracy. They consist of a rotating shaft with multiple ports or channels that, as the shaft rotates, direct the flow to different outputs in a cyclic order. Valve solutions, on the other hand, are smaller, more compact and easier to integrate with other system functions.
Sun Hydraulics offers flow divider valves with a wide range of flow capacities, from 6 to 270 l/min, and pressure ratings up to 350 bar. These compact valves provide precise flow division and combining accuracy, with a high flow capacity relative to their size. For applications requiring bi-directional static error correction, synchronizing versions are also available.
