Balanced load holding valves

Balanced load holding valves are used to secure and control loads in systems where pressure variations can affect stability and movement. They differ from conventional load holding valves by automatically compensating for load pressure fluctuations, ensuring smoother and more predictable motion. This is achieved through an internal balanced modulation mechanism, which ensures the valve responds proportionally to a control pressure rather than being directly influenced by load pressure. Another key feature is that the valve combines a check valve with a modulating element. The check valve allows free flow in one direction, while the modulating element regulates flow in the other direction. Pilot pressure at a designated port determines the degree of valve opening, providing controlled and stable movement.

How balanced load holding valves works

Balanced load holding valves are proportional loadholders and combine a balanced modulating element with a reverse flow check. The check valve allows free flow from the directional valve (port 2) to the load (port 1) while the pilot to open modulating element controls flow from port 1 to port 2. Pilot pressure at port 3 determines the flow setting. These valves are balanced against load pressures and therefore exhibits self-compensation. Flow is controlled by the pilot pressure. Because of dynamic seals, performance is best in the meter out mode with port 1 being the load and port 2 being tank.

Suitable for winches

Not for cross-pilot

Balanced load holding valves are not suitable when control pressure is sourced from the opposite side, a setup known as “cross-pilot.” In such configurations, the control pressure may interfere with the intended operation of the valve, leading to instability and unpredictable performance.
