SUN Hydraulics cavity overview and explanation of cavity systems

Sun Hydraulics has developed a proprietary, smart, and modular cavity system that offers several key advantages compared to other brands. Here we explain why Sun Hydraulics valves are a more reliable and flexible choice for your hydraulic solution. Feel free to contact us if you want to learn more!

Multiple hydraulic valves fit into the same cavity

Several different hydraulic valves and variants fit into the same cavity. This means that:

  • If you have chosen a valve that does not perform optimally, there are often several other options that fit the same cavity.

  • It is very easy to unscrew one valve and install another without needing to replace the hydraulic manifold.

Sun Hydraulics valves provide excellent repeatability

The reason behind Sun Hydraulics’ unique cavity design lies in the innovative design of the valve itself. The valve nose is specially designed—not made as one solid piece, but instead it is articulated and movable.

The articulated nose, called the “Floating Nose,” means that:

  • The valve compensates for unevenness in the cavity that can occur during machining.

  • The hydraulic valve achieves better repeatability because the slide in the nose can move freely.

  • There is less risk of the valve sticking.

  • Ports 2 and 3 can be made larger, reducing pressure drop and energy losses.

Floating nose for better performance

The image below shows the difference between a hydraulic valve without an articulated nose (ISO and SAE standard) and one with Sun Hydraulics’ Floating Nose. The purple part in both drawings is the slide, which is free to move. In the ISO & SAE standard, the nose (red part) is one solid piece, whereas in Sun Hydraulics’ Floating Nose, the red part is much smaller and can more easily adapt to any differences between cavities.

Larger working ports with Sun Hydraulics cavities

The image below illustrates the difference in port size. Thanks to Sun Hydraulics’ Floating Nose, the flow area for the oil is larger, allowing for bigger working ports.
